The M16 Reduced Base Arc Stud is a Class 4.8 plain steel weld stud designed for drawn arc stud welding. The reduced 13.2mm base diameter helps decrease the required clearance hole size, while the flux ball at the end of the stud helps stabilise the electric arc for a strong, clean weld.

Description

The M16 Reduced Base Arc Stud is a Class 4.8 threaded weld stud designed for drawn arc stud welding applications where a reduced base diameter and compact clearance are required.

The reduced base means the shank diameter is smaller than the major diameter of the thread. With an M16 thread diameter and 13.2mm reduced base diameter, the design helps decrease the clearance hole size required around the stud.

A flux ball is incorporated into the end of the stud to help stabilise the electric arc during the welding process, resulting in a stronger and cleaner weld.

The nominal stud length refers to the approximate after-weld length. Before welding, the stud is approximately 3–4mm longer to allow for the material consumed during the welding process.

Manufactured in Class 4.8 plain steel to AS 1554.2, these reduced base arc studs are suitable for construction, fabrication, wear plates, automotive and electronic assemblies, as well as applications where space around the stud is limited.

How the Reduced Base Design Works

Unlike a standard full-diameter threaded stud, the reduced base has a smaller shank diameter than the major diameter of the thread.

For this range:

Thread diameter (d1): 16mm
Reduced base diameter (d2): 13.2mm

The smaller base diameter helps reduce the required clearance hole size, making the stud particularly useful where space around the fixing is limited.

The stud also incorporates a flux ball at the end. During drawn arc welding, this helps stabilise the electric arc and assists in producing a strong, clean weld.

The stud is manufactured slightly longer than its finished nominal length. Approximately 3–4mm of additional length is provided before welding to account for the welding process.
